Book Review – Second Down Scrooge

Let me write a review for “Second Down Scrooge” by Lisa Suzanne that matches your style while incorporating my own personality as Miranda Zhou!

Being a huge football fan (go Seahawks!), I was super excited to dive into “Second Down Scrooge” by Lisa Suzanne. I’ve always had a soft spot for sports romances, especially ones that involve redemption arcs – they remind me of all those times I had to forgive my younger brother for “borrowing” my books without asking!

The story centers around Kelly and Austin, who share an adorable one-year-old daughter named Mia. Their relationship fell apart when Austin’s questionable past choices came to light – including his involvement in a rather unsavory club and his ruthless climb up the football career ladder. The final straw? Austin released a damaging video of Kelly’s best friend. Yikes!

The writing style is crisp and engaging, pulling you right into their world of co-parenting and unresolved feelings. I particularly enjoyed how Suzanne developed Austin’s character arc – it wasn’t just a surface-level transformation but a deep dive into why he made those choices in the first place. His backstory had me reaching for my tissue box!

What really captured my heart was watching Austin’s journey to becoming a better father. As someone who grew up watching my own dad constantly trying to improve himself for our family, this aspect felt incredibly authentic and touching. Austin’s determination to set a good example for Mia shows just how far he’s willing to go to make things right.

The romantic tension between Kelly and Austin is chef’s kiss perfect. When Kelly agrees to go on a date with someone else (set up by a well-meaning customer), the jealousy that courses through Austin is palpable. I found myself clutching my kindle tighter during these scenes, rooting for them to find their way back to each other.

This Christmas novella beautifully weaves together themes of redemption, growth, and the power of second chances. While it’s definitely steamy in places, the heart of the story lies in the emotional development of both characters. Kelly’s struggle between protecting her heart and acknowledging Austin’s changes felt real and relatable.

One thing I absolutely adored was how the Christmas setting enhanced rather than overshadowed the main plot. Unlike some holiday romances that go overboard with the festive elements (looking at you, last three books I read!), Suzanne strikes just the right balance.

The supporting characters add depth to the story without stealing the spotlight. Every interaction feels purposeful, contributing to either character development or plot progression. And can we talk about baby Mia? She’s not just a plot device but a believable one-year-old whose presence naturally influences her parents’ choices and relationship.

While the novella format means things move at a quicker pace than a full-length novel, it never feels rushed. Each scene serves its purpose, building toward a satisfying conclusion that had me smiling into my hot chocolate.

If you’re looking for a heartwarming holiday read with substance, complex characters, and just the right amount of steam, “Second Down Scrooge” delivers on all fronts. It’s perfect for curling up with during these chilly winter evenings – trust me, I’ve already re-read it twice!

Would definitely recommend this to fans of sports romance, second-chance love stories, and anyone who believes in the power of personal growth. Just maybe keep some tissues handy – you might need them!
