Book Review – Daisy Jones and the Six

Sometimes a book comes along that feels so authentic, so vivid, that you forget you’re reading fiction. Daisy Jones & The Six is exactly that kind of story – a spellbinding tale that captures the raw energy and undeniable magic of 1970s rock and roll. From the first page, I was completely immersed in this world of vinyl records, smoky recording studios, and the intoxicating rush of stadium concerts.

The novel takes an unconventional approach, presenting itself as a series of interview transcripts with members of the legendary (fictional) band The Six, along with various music industry figures who witnessed their meteoric rise and dramatic fall. What struck me immediately was how authentic everything feels – from the gritty details of touring life to the creative tensions that arise during songwriting sessions. Jenkins Reid has crafted such believable characters that I kept having to remind myself that this wasn’t a real band I could look up on Spotify!

The heart of the story lies in the electric dynamic between Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, two deeply flawed but magnetic personalities whose creative partnership forms the backbone of the band’s success. Their relationship is complicated, messy, and utterly compelling. Having spent countless hours in my teenage years writing angsty poetry in coffee shops, I could relate to that burning desire to create something meaningful, even if my own artistic pursuits never quite reached stadium-tour levels!

What truly elevates this book is its exploration of addiction and recovery. As someone who has watched friends struggle with substance abuse, I deeply appreciated how Jenkins Reid handles these themes with both brutal honesty and profound empathy. The narrative doesn’t shy away from showing the devastating impact of addiction, while also offering glimpses of hope and redemption.

The female characters in this novel absolutely shine. In an era where women in rock were often relegated to “groupie” status, we get to see complex, ambitious women fighting to be taken seriously as artists and professionals. There’s a particular scene where Daisy demands recognition for her songwriting contributions that had me practically cheering out loud in my favorite reading spot (sorry, other cafĂ© patrons!).

The attention to musical detail is extraordinary – Jenkins Reid has created an entire discography that feels real enough to chart. The songwriting process is depicted with such authenticity that I found myself humming melodies that don’t actually exist! I can’t wait to see how the upcoming adaptation brings these songs to life.

While I adored most aspects of this book, I did find that the ending left me wanting just a bit more resolution. I understand the artistic choice behind it, but my heart wanted just one more chapter, one more song, one more moment with these characters who had become so real to me.

Jenkins Reid has accomplished something remarkable here – she’s written a book that feels less like fiction and more like a time capsule from an era when rock and roll wasn’t just music, but a revolution. Whether you’re a music buff or not, Daisy Jones & The Six offers an intoxicating glimpse into a world of creativity, passion, and the price of fame that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

And speaking of music, I’ve created the perfect reading playlist to accompany this book – a mix of Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and other iconic 70s bands that capture that same electric energy. Because sometimes the best way to experience a book about rock and roll is with your own soundtrack playing in the background.

Daisy Jones & The Six is more than just a story about a band – it’s about art, ambition, love, and the complicated ways these elements intersect in our lives. It’s about the songs we write, the mistakes we make, and the people who shape us along the way. And like all the best rock songs, it’ll make you feel everything deeply.
